A bottleful of tears

JENNY WILLIAMS, WEDNESDAY 8 APRIL 2020

‘You have kept count of my tossings;

put my tears in your bottle.

Are they not in your book?’ Psalm 56:8 (ESV)

These words were spoken by King David when he faced great peril - he had been captured by the Philistines. David cried out to God for gracious deliverance from his enemies.

Such words point to our King Jesus who also trusted in God for deliverance from his enemies. In Christ, we make these words ours too, as we trust in God’s ultimate deliverance through the resurrection of Jesus. Hallelujah!

But let’s take a moment to meditate on the beautiful and very personal poetry of this verse.

Our LORD knows all our fears and all our tears. Not one tear is missed by Him. Our LORD has put each tear into His bottle.

This season for us will bring many tears. There are funerals we can’t attend, weddings that are cancelled, loved ones who are far away, financial and work pressures will abound, and most painful of all, there may come the grief of bereavement.

Tears are not wrong. Our LORD counts them all. He knows. He cares. Let’s bring our tears to Him.
